Perseus flies in to rescue Andromeda who is chained to a rock as a sacrifice to placate the sea monster sent by Poseidon to destroy her native country.

Description of the painting by Peter Rubens “Perseus and Andromeda”

The two landscapes had been painted by Rubens as a pendant pair but had not been displayed together in over two hundred years. The idea seemed likely to remain only a pipe dream. When I was given the honor of rehanging the Great Gallery with Christoph Vogtherr, director at the time, we tried a number of other locations for the painting but soon realized why it had kept its central position through several previous rehangs. Its bold composition, color range and sheer size demand attention. When frequently contemplating the work during this project, my mind would inevitably turn to its companion piece, kept just a short distance away in central London. I felt a strong sense of regret that the two would never be viewed together. I was not the first to think this; the former director John Ingamells had lamented in that the opportunity to reunite the pair had been lost forever. An opportunity eventually did however come to reunite the pair when the Wallace Collection entered an unprecedented reciprocal loan agreement with the National Gallery.

Perseus And Andromeda

Giordano has illustrated the dramatic moment when Phineas and his followers attack Perseus. Heavily outnumbered, Perseus has unveiled the severed head of the gorgon Medusa, who he had recently slain. He averts his eyes, because all those who look on Medusa immediately turn to stone. His attackers have had no time to react, and Giordano has vividly portrayed their flesh turning from pink to stone grey.

The artist copied from a copy, once in the Royal Collection and now in the National Gallery, London, which was itself after the original painting by Guido Reni, , in Palazzo Rospigliosi-Pallavicini, Rome. The mytholgical story is told by Ovid in his Metamorphoses. The monster is seen looming behind the rock with its jaws open. Perseus, her rescuer, arrives on his winged white horse, Pegasus, in the sky on the upper left. It can be collected in person, or for a shipping quote please contact [email protected]. I make soft puppets out of fabrics and often create fantastical set-like installations with them and a costumed me, that I then photograph. These show my love for the theatrical and the Victorian aesthetic. I channel my alter egos through these puppets and thus question the reality of identity…what is real and what is fake. Are we tied to one body or does who we are surpass the constraints of a human body? The physically human holds a conversation with the psychologically human in my work.
